Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) –The United Nations commended the Somalia’s progress and reaffirmed its support for the nation’s future plans, in the launch of the country’s Centennial Vision 2060 (CV2060) on Monday, Claver Gatete, the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Africa (ECA), emphasized the importance of Somalia’s determination amidst global challenges such as climate volatility and geopolitical conflict.
“Today, Somalia has chosen to forge ahead,” Mr. Gatete remarked. “Through its Centennial Vision 2060, the country is reclaiming its voice, rewriting its story, and reinventing its future with collective resolve.” He called CV2060 not just a policy document but a declaration of confidence, resilience, and ambition by the Somali people.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, highlighted that the Vision is foundational to the country's recovery and reconstruction after decades of conflict. CV2060 aims to transform Somalia into a middle-income country by 2060, focusing on building capable state institutions, addressing economic fragility, and tackling security and infrastructure challenges.
Gatete also drew inspiration from Rwanda’s post-genocide transformation, stressing that like Rwanda’s Vision 2020, Somalia can achieve similar success with long-term planning, inclusive leadership, and sustained political will. “Why not Somalia? Why not now?” he questioned, encouraging the international community to support Somalia’s bold vision.
The ECA reaffirmed its commitment to support Somalia’s Vision 2060, assisting in areas such as public-private partnerships and evidence-based policymaking. “With sustained collaboration and political will, Vision 2060 will not just be imagined; it will be realized,” concluded Gatete.
With the launch of CV2060, Somalia embarks on a transformative journey to a peaceful, prosperous, and unified future.
