U.S June 20 ,2026 - Turkey’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey has taken a worrying turn after two consecutive defeats in the group stage, leaving them bottom of their group with zero points and no goals scored. What began as a campaign filled with cautious optimism has quickly turned into a battle for survival, with qualification for the knockout rounds now hanging by a thread.
The opening phase of the tournament has exposed several structural issues within the Turkish side. After two matches, Turkey have lost 2–0 to Australia and 1–0 to Paraguay, results that reflect both a lack of attacking efficiency and moments of defensive fragility. In total, they have conceded three goals without replying once, a statistic that highlights the scale of their struggles in the final third.
Against Australia, Turkey struggled to impose themselves despite periods of possession. Their inability to convert territorial dominance into meaningful chances was punished on the counterattack, where Australia showed greater urgency and clinical finishing. The defeat set the tone for what would become an increasingly difficult campaign. In their second outing against Paraguay, the pattern repeated itself. Turkey again failed to find the net and were undone by an early goal that forced them into chasing the game for long stretches without success.
Beyond the scorelines, the deeper concern lies in how predictable Turkey have looked in attack. While they have managed to control phases of possession in midfield, their build-up play has lacked penetration and speed in decisive areas. The final pass has often been missing, and opposing defences have been able to absorb pressure without much difficulty. This has placed added pressure on the forwards, who have so far been unable to deliver a breakthrough moment when it matters most.
Defensively, Turkey have not been completely overwhelmed, but key lapses at crucial moments have cost them dearly. Both defeats were shaped by small errors that shifted momentum away from them, forcing the team into uncomfortable chasing positions. At World Cup level, such moments often define campaigns, and Turkey have found themselves on the wrong side of those fine margins.

Despite growing public frustration and viral claims suggesting elimination, Turkey are not officially out of the tournament yet. Under the expanded 2026 World Cup format, there remains a narrow mathematical pathway to the knockout stage, particularly through the best third-placed team qualification route. However, the reality is far more unforgiving. With zero points from two matches, their margin for error has effectively disappeared.
Their final group game against the United States now becomes a decisive fixture that will determine whether their World Cup story continues or ends prematurely. It is a must-win encounter, and even victory may not be enough depending on results elsewhere in the group and across other groups. Goal difference could also play a critical role, adding another layer of pressure to an already difficult situation.
What makes the challenge even greater is the form of their opponents. The United States have shown strong early momentum in the group and will enter the match with confidence and home support. For Turkey, this means not only needing to rediscover their attacking rhythm but also having to manage the psychological weight of elimination pressure.
At this stage, Turkey’s campaign sits at a crossroads. Mathematically, survival is still possible, but practically, they are on the brink. Without a dramatic turnaround in both performance and efficiency, their 2026 World Cup journey risks ending as one of the early disappointments of the tournament.
