Kenya, May 30, 2026 - The Turkana County Government, through the Department of Mining, has intensified efforts to promote responsible and inclusive mining by conducting public engagement forums at the Kalomwae and Juluk mining sites in Aroo Subcounty.
The forums brought together local residents, government officials, stakeholders and representatives of Kaliao Construction and Supplies Limited to discuss proposed mining activities, community participation, environmental conservation and the benefits expected from mining investments in the area.
Speaking during the engagements, County Mining Deputy Director Elim Areman emphasized the need for responsible and inclusive mining practices, noting that land belongs to the community and that investors must work closely with local residents to ensure mutual benefit.
He further underscored the importance of environmental conservation, adherence to safety measures and community ownership in safeguarding local interests while ensuring that communities benefit from mining investments.
The forums were also led by Aroo Subcounty Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Dennis Barasa, who called for peaceful coexistence, enhanced security and strict adherence to mining regulations to support sustainable development in the area.

The engagements also gave Kalomwae and Juluk residents an opportunity to express their views, concerns and expectations regarding the proposed mining activities, with leaders reaffirming the County Government’s commitment to transparency and community involvement in the sector.
The County Government continues to promote responsible mining practices aimed at creating economic opportunities and improving livelihoods for local communities across the county.
Others present included Eregae Micklam, Chairman of the Turkana Artisanal Mining Committee; Ekal Lokuruka, County Legal Officer; Alfred Lomodei, Aroo Subcounty Administrator; Erod Wilfred, Revenue Officer; and the OCS of Aroo Subcounty.
