Baidoa (Dawan) — South West State authorities inaugurated a new European Union-funded sports ground on Saturday, with officials saying it will “strengthen youth development community peacebuilding”.
The ground was built by the NIS Foundation with financial support from the EU. It was formally opened by South West State Acting Leader Jibril Abdiraashid Haji during a ceremony attended by local officials and community members.
Speaking at the event, Haji thanked the EU, NIS Foundation and the federal Ministry of Interior for their contribution to the project, saying the facility would provide lasting benefits for the local community.
“This sports ground will contribute to social integration, strengthen friendships among young people and promote peaceful coexistence within the community,” he said.

Officials said the facility has been formally handed over to the district administration, which will be responsible for its management, maintenance and security to ensure continued public access and long-term sustainability.
Jibril also encouraged development partners to support similar community projects, particularly initiatives that expand opportunities for women and youth through sports and social services.
He urged residents to make good use of the facility and play an active role in protecting it while supporting peace and stability in the area.
Sports facilities are increasingly viewed as important community assets in Somalia, providing safe spaces for youth engagement, recreation and interaction while helping strengthen social bonds and community resilience.
