Somalia, April 4, 2026 – A presidential candidate in Somalia’s South West State has questioned the legality of recent federal government appointments related to the regional administration, saying they do not comply with the state’s constitution.
Mohamed Adan Farkeeti made the remarks after arriving in Baidoa on Saturday, the interim capital of South West State.
He said appointments issued by the Ministry of Interior and the Office of the Prime Minister concerning the state were unlawful and called for adherence to legal procedures.
“Appointments coming from the Ministry of Interior and the Office of the Prime Minister are not legal, and we call for adherence to the law,” Farkeeti said.

He added that the South West State constitution clearly defines the process for leadership transition, stipulating that the speaker of the regional parliament assumes interim leadership, or the deputy speaker in the speaker’s absence, until elections are held.
Farkeeti accused the federal government of bypassing this framework by introducing a new leadership arrangement from Mogadishu without following constitutional procedures.
He warned against what he described as “another dark chapter” and called for elections to be conducted independently and in accordance with the law.
His remarks follow the appointment of Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi as interim leader of South West State by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre earlier this month.
