Somalia, 15 June 2026 – Somaliland said on Monday night it had opened an embassy in Jerusalem, a move its presidency described as a historic step in strengthening relations with Israel and advancing its bid for recognition.
Somaliland’s presidency said President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro formally inaugurated the embassy during his official visit to Israel.
The presidency said the embassy was the first Somaliland mission opened in what it described as an international diplomatic capital. It also said Somaliland had become, in its words, the eighth country to open an embassy in Jerusalem.

The presidency said the embassy opening reflected Somaliland’s efforts to deepen diplomatic ties with Israel based on mutual respect, cooperation and shared interests in peace, security and development.
It said the mission would support a new phase in Somaliland-Israel relations and serve as a basis for strategic cooperation in political, economic and development fields.
The presidency said Irro expressed confidence that Somaliland would continue to strengthen its friendship and strategic partnership with Israel for the benefit of both sides.
