Togdheer (Dawan Africa) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” has welcomed recent remarks by former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, in which he expressed support for Somaliland.
Speaking in Togdheer region on Friday, President Irro congratulated Somali politicians who, he said, have acknowledged Somaliland’s progress and its right to seek recognition.“I congratulate Somali politicians, especially Roble, who have recognized that Somaliland has achieved much and has the right to pursue independence,” Irro said.
He also criticized other Somali politicians whom he accused of opposing Somaliland’s peace and recognition, claiming they are more focused on exploiting the fight against Al-Shabaab for political gain.
Irro’s comments came a day after Roble, speaking in Mogadishu on Thursday, declared his support and solidarity with Somaliland, accusing the federal government of using threats instead of engaging in dialogue with the self-declared republic.
Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has governed its own internal affairs since, though it has yet to secure formal international recognition.
