Somalia, 18 November 2025 — Somaliland’s Vice President has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance as drought conditions worsen across several regions, leaving thousands of households facing acute shortages of water, food and basic services.
Speaking on Monday, Vice President Mahamed Ali Aw Abdi said the drought is rapidly intensifying and communities have lost access to essential sources of livelihood.
“The drought has become severe and continues to spread. There is no water, there is no food — people are dying of hunger,” the Vice President said.
He warned that many families are now at risk of malnutrition and severe hardship, urging the public to support one another and contribute whatever they can to help those affected.
A report released by the United Nations Office For Coordination Of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicates that the drought has significantly worsened following the extremely poor April–June (Gu’) rains.

An assessment conducted in August found that most people living in Zeylac and Lughaye districts of Awdal region have been severely affected, with livestock-based livelihoods destroyed, pasture depleted and water availability dangerously low.
Additional humanitarian updates show that hundreds of thousands of people across Awdal, North West, Togdheer, Sanaag and Sool now require urgent assistance, including water, food, medicines and nutrition support.
The Vice President said that although Somaliland authorities are mobilising emergency relief, the scale of the drought exceeds current capacities.
He called for widespread support from both local communities and the international humanitarian community to reduce the growing impact of the crisis.
