Baki, 20 August 2026 — Somaliland’s Minister of Livestock Development Omar Shucayb Mohamed on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a new meat and vegetable market in Baki district, funded by the African Development Bank.
Officials said the market will improve commercial and sanitation conditions in the district and provide traders with a modern facility to sell their products.
The project is part of the BREFONS programme, Build Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security, financed by the African Development Fund. The financing agreement was channelled through the Federal Government of Somalia, with the Federal Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range as the executing agency. Save the Children International is the implementing agency.
Under the programme, contract payments are made through the Bank’s direct-payment mechanism rather than being transferred first to Somaliland.
