Somalia, 6 January 2026 Somalia’s UN Security Council presidency gets underway amidst global turmoil, with Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman convening the first emergency meeting on Venezuela crisis following the U.S. invasion and capture of its president, Nicholas Maduro.
The hurriedly convened meeting is a testament to what’s in store for Somalia for the next one month as it heads the United Nations most powerful organ.

The leadership role marks Somalia’s re-entry into global decision-making following years of conflict and instability. During its term, Somalia will chair important sessions, including an open debate on strengthening international law to maintain global peace and security on January 26, and a quarterly open debate on the Middle East on January 28. These meetings are part of the agenda for the month, and Somalia’s leadership will be assessed on how it works towards advancing peace and stability both in the region and globally.
