Somalia, July 19 2026 – Somalia’s federal parliament will resume sittings on Aug. 1 after its regular parliamentary recess, the leadership of the House of the People and the Upper House said on Sunday.
The speakers of the two houses agreed on the date following consultations and called on members of the House of the People and senators to return before the opening of the eighth session of the 11th Federal Parliament.
The parliamentary leadership said the reopening would allow lawmakers to continue carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, but it did not publish a detailed agenda for the session.

The reopening comes after the original four-year term under which the current parliament was formed ended earlier this year. The federal government and parliamentary leadership say changes to the constitutional framework extended the mandates of federal institutions from four to five years.
Opposition politicians and some federal member states dispute that position, arguing that the changes should not be applied to institutions elected under the previous four-year arrangement.
The disagreement has added to wider political tensions over the timing and format of Somalia’s next federal elections.
