BELGRADE, September 2, 2026 — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met Algerian parliament speaker Khalida Boufeddach in Belgrade, where they discussed strengthening bilateral relations and expanding parliamentary cooperation, Algeria’s state news agency reported Wednesday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of an event marking the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement, attended by officials and representatives from member and partner countries in the Serbian capital. Hassan Sheikh and Boufeddach discussed ways to deepen cooperation and coordination between Somalia and Algeria, particularly between their parliaments, in support of shared interests and greater African unity, according to the Algerian Press Service. They also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest amid political and security challenges facing the region and the wider international community. The two officials stressed the importance of greater coordination, dialogue and consultation between governments and peoples, in line with the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, including respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in countries’ internal affairs. Boufeddach attended the Belgrade gathering as the representative of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian Press Service said. Somalia and Algeria have stepped up diplomatic engagement in recent years as the two countries seek to broaden bilateral cooperation. Hassan Sheikh received the credentials of Algeria’s ambassador to Somalia, Mohamed Alim, on Aug. 19, in another recent step in relations between Mogadishu and Algiers.
