Mogadishu(Dawan Africa) – The Federal Government of Somalia has publicly welcomed France’s declared intention to recognize the State of Palestine, calling the move “historic and principled” in a press statement issued on Friday.
According to the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the announcement by the French government constitutes an affirmation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and sovereign statehood. The Ministry described the recognition as “a courageous contribution to the growing international consensus in support of justice and peace.”
“This significant step constitutes a reaffirmation of the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and sovereign statehood, in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions,” the statement read.
Somalia also reiterated its support for a two-state solution, calling France’s move a timely gesture that aligns with efforts to establish peace in the Middle East. The declaration follows increasing global momentum behind Palestine’s bid for recognition at the United Nations and among European states.
The Somali government has consistently supported Palestinian statehood in international forums, often highlighting the humanitarian consequences of the prolonged conflict and the need for political solutions grounded in international law.
France has yet to formalize the recognition through diplomatic channels, but the public announcement marks a shift in positioning by one of the European Union’s most influential members.
