Somalia, 29 September 2025 – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced today that Somalia has established naval units operating helicopters and other modern warfare technology in fighting Al-Shabaab, marking a significant step in the country’s security transition.
Speaking at the opening of the 7th session of the Federal Parliament, the President said the government had allocated most of its budget to restoring security and invested in training and equipping the armed forces.
“Today, Somali boys are flying the helicopters we use to fight the Khawaarij. We have activated our naval forces, and they are using modern technology,” he said.
He praised the sacrifices of Somali troops and local defence units, underscoring their role in pushing militants out of key areas.
“Special praise is due to the heroes of the Somali National Army and the local defence forces who have sacrificed their lives and wealth to liberate our country,” he added.
At the same time, he warned that the group, which he referred to as “Khawaarij,” had shifted tactics after military losses, turning to clan divisions, propaganda, and religious disputes.
“The enemy has many tricks… dividing clans, spreading propaganda, and creating religious disputes are the tactics the Khawaarij now rely on after failing on the battlefield,” he said.
The President’s remarks come as Somalia prepares to assume full security responsibility from African Union forces, with government officials describing the new capabilities as a milestone in achieving long-term stability
