Uganda, July 30 2026 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met in Kampala on Thursday to discuss support for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), a day before a summit of countries contributing troops to the mission.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and cooperation in security, counterterrorism, state-building and regional stability, according to a statement from Somalia’s presidency.
They also exchanged views on the importance of the AUSSOM summit, which is due to open in Kampala on Friday and is expected to bring together leaders from troop-contributing countries.
The summit is expected to focus on support for Somalia’s security, the future of the African Union mission and regional cooperation aimed at advancing peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

Mohamud and Museveni stressed the importance of continued international backing for Somalia as it seeks to strengthen security, build state institutions and expand government authority, the presidency said.
Uganda is one of the largest troop contributors to AUSSOM and has played a central role in African Union peace operations in Somalia since the first Ugandan troops were deployed in 2007.
The Kampala summit comes as the African Union and troop-contributing countries consider the mission’s future, funding and operational requirements. The current authorisation for AUSSOM expires on December 31, 2026, meaning any extension or major change to the mission would require a new decision by the United Nations Security Council.
