Somalia, 10 June 2026 – Somalia’s National Communications Authority and the National IPv6 Center met in Mogadishu on Wednesday to plan the country's shift to IPv6 and upgrade digital infrastructure.
The meeting brought together internet service providers, universities, ICT professionals, telecommunications and technology experts, and other key stakeholders.
The National IPv6 Center is hosted by Jamhuuriya University of Science and Technology.
Organisers said the meeting was intended to raise awareness of IPv6 adoption, strengthen cooperation among stakeholders and support Somalia’s digital transformation agenda.
IPv6, or Internet Protocol version 6, is the next-generation internet protocol designed to expand the number of available internet addresses and support the growth of digital services.
The Rector of Jamhuuriya University of Science and Technology, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamud, said universities have an important role in preparing the next generation of ICT professionals.

“Preparing the next generation of ICT professionals is essential for Somalia’s digital future,” he said, adding that universities can support IPv6 knowledge, research and innovation.
The Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mustafa Yasiin Sheikh, said Somalia needed to keep pace with global technological changes in order to fully benefit from modern technology.
“Our vision has always been to ensure that Somalia does not fall behind the global technological transition,” he said.
He said the National IPv6 Center had moved from being a vision to an operational platform supporting Somalia’s internet development.
Experts at the meeting called for a national IPv6 strategy, technical deployment, transition planning, policy and governance, IP address planning and frameworks to support wider IPv6 adoption across Somalia.
