MOGADISHU, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said Somalia is seeking to broaden its partnership with the United States beyond traditional security cooperation, identifying trade, investment, technology, infrastructure and the blue economy as key areas for future collaboration.
Speaking during a reception marking the 250th anniversary of American independence at the United States Embassy in Mogadishu on Thursday, the President said the relationship between the two countries continues to evolve as Somalia makes progress in rebuilding its institutions.
“While cooperation in security remains essential as we continue the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS and strengthen the capabilities of our national security institutions, our shared agenda extends far beyond security,” he said.
The President said Somalia sees growing opportunities to deepen cooperation with the United States in trade and investment, technology, infrastructure and the blue economy.

To support those ambitions, he said Somalia is implementing legal and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening governance and creating a more competitive environment for business and investment.
Hassan Sheikh also expressed appreciation for longstanding US support in strengthening Somalia’s national institutions, advancing economic reforms, promoting development and supporting efforts to achieve lasting peace and security.
He congratulated the Government and people of the United States on the country’s 250th anniversary of independence and said the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on partnerships that contribute to peace, stability and global prosperity.
