Somalia, 2 February 2026 – The federal government and regional states on Sunday called on international partners to support efforts to address water shortages linked to prolonged drought conditions.
The call was made at the conclusion of a two-day Federal-State Energy and Water Coordination Conference held in Dhusamareb, attended by ministers responsible for energy and water from the federal government and regional administrations.
Minister of Energy and Water Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame said the country continued to face water scarcity, particularly in rural areas, adding that assistance was needed to support affected communities.

“We are calling on international partners to provide support to communities affected by water shortages,” Bidhan said.
The appeal comes as the country faces severe drought, with reports from some regional states of deaths linked to water shortages.
Conference participants discussed coordination between federal and regional authorities and reviewed ongoing projects in the energy and water sectors, including the Electricity Recovery Project (ILAYS), the Jowhar Water Development Project, the Barwaaqo+ programme and the Abaartire drought-response initiative.
