MOGADISHU, 3 August 2026 – Somalia's parliamentary election committee has scheduled the election of a new Speaker of the House of the People for Aug. 10, setting in motion the process to replace former Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur ‘Madobe’.
The committee announced the timetable after holding its first meeting at Villa Hargeisa on Monday, where lawmakers unanimously elected Abdirizak Omar Mohamed as chair of the committee overseeing the election.
The committee also approved the election procedures and candidate requirements.
Under the rules, candidates seeking the speakership must pay a non-refundable registration fee of $30,000, to be deposited into the House of the People's account at the Central Bank of Somalia.

Female candidates will pay $15,000, half the standard registration fee.
The committee said candidate registration will close on Aug. 6, allowing time to verify applications and complete preparations before voting begins on Aug. 10.
The election follows the resignation of former Speaker Madobe on June 20, after he was elected leader of South West State.
The incoming speaker will preside over the lower chamber of Somalia's federal parliament at a time when lawmakers are expected to debate key political and constitutional issues, including electoral reforms and the country's ongoing constitutional review.
