Somalia, 2 July 2026 – Somalia’s defence ministry said on Thusrday that 27 Al Shabaab fighters were killed in joint military strikes carried out in the Lower Shabelle region over two days.
The ministry said the strikes were conducted on July 1 and July 2 by the Somali National Army, with support from international partners, targeting locations in Tawakal, Nuun Garre and Ugunji.
According to the ministry, the strikes also wounded dozens of Al Shabaab fighters.
It said the operations destroyed vehicles, weapons, military supplies and positions used by the Islamist militant group to plan and carry out attacks.

The government did not specify which international partners were involved in the operation.
Somalia has intensified military operations against the group in recent years, supported by African Union forces and international partners.
The defence ministry said operations targeting Al Shabaab militants would continue until the threat posed by the group is eliminated.
