Somalia, 8 October 2025 – Somalia today regained control over the management and monitoring of human rights following a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The meeting marked a significant milestone for Somalia as it sought to restore its human rights oversight responsibilities from the United Nations. Since 1993, the United Nations Human Rights Agency has been in charge of monitoring, investigating, and reporting on human rights issues in Somalia.
In a statement, the Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, emphasized that extensive efforts and support from many countries had enabled Somalia reclaim this authority, describing the occasion as "a significant day" in Somalia’s history.
"Today is a great day for Somalia as we write a new chapter in our history, and I would like to sincerely thank the countries that supported us in this challenging campaign," she wrote on her Facebook page.
Countries that have rejoined the United Nations Human Rights Agency include Yemen, Libya, Cambodia, and several others. The decision is expected to provide an opportunity for the government to advance the country's human rights situation.
