MOGADISHU (Dawan) 27 July 2026 – Somalia has launched national consultations to prepare for Super El Nino 2026, with SODMA convening officials and women’s organizations in Mogadishu to strengthen early warnings and inter-agency coordination.
The National Disaster Management Authority (SODMA) said the consultations aim to ensure alerts reach communities in time and response efforts are better coordinated ahead of the expected climate event.
During the meeting, participants presented eight key recommendations. They include prioritizing drought-affected regions, supporting displaced families, and preventing flooding in Hirshabelle.

Other recommendations focus on recognizing women’s leadership in disaster response, using media to disseminate alerts, and raising awareness among vulnerable groups. Participants also called for assessments of impacts on infrastructure such as roads and areas of standing water, and for the formation of women-led teams to organize and manage emergency preparedness funds.
Officials and civil society representatives emphasized that collaboration, dialogue, and timely early warnings will be critical to reducing the impact of Super El Nino and ensuring preventive measures reach all at-risk populations.
