Mogadishu, 22 September 2026 – The Federal Government of Somalia has officially launched the “Made in Somalia” mark, a national label to be placed on products manufactured or produced domestically and meeting required standards.
The mark was unveiled on Tuesday during the 2026 Somalia Production and Industry Exhibition, where officials highlighted efforts to expand local manufacturing and increase recognition of Somali-made products.
Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid said Somali products have historically been exported or marketed under the identity of other countries, arguing the new mark would give locally produced goods a clearer national identity.
“It is a major and historic achievement for our products to carry the words ‘Made in Somalia’. As you know, livestock is exported from Somalia to Oman, where it is fattened, and is then labelled as belonging to Oman,” Abdirashid said.
The government said products seeking to carry the label will have to meet requirements established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry intended to verify that the product is genuinely produced or manufactured in Somalia.

Officials said 75 factories are currently operating in Somalia and producing goods on a regular basis. Products from companies that meet the applicable requirements will be eligible to carry the national mark.
The “Made in Somalia” mark was previously approved by the Council of Ministers and forms part of the country’s legal framework governing the origin of goods.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has said Somalia imported goods worth about $9 billion from abroad in 2024. The government is now seeking to increase domestic production so that a greater share of consumer spending can remain within the Somali economy.
The initiative is also intended to encourage value addition, including processing and manufacturing, rather than relying primarily on the export of raw products.
