Somalia, July 27 2026 – Somalia has launched a free week-long surgical campaign to treatment women with childbirth-related injuries, aiming to reach more than 30 patients.
The campaign, organized by Mama Zahra Foundation in partnership with Banadir Mother and Child Hospital, began on July 26 and will run until Aug. 2, targeting women from across the country who require specialized treatment.
The programme focuses on treating obstetric fistula, a childbirth injury that can develop after prolonged or obstructed labour, leaving women with severe physical complications if left untreated.
Banadir Regional Administration Secretary General Bilan Bile Mahmoud said the service addresses a long-standing healthcare need for Somali women.

"We have seen young girls and older women living with this condition, some of them for as long as 12 years," she said during the launch of the campaign.
Officials from Mama Zahra Foundation said the initiative is intended to restore the health and dignity of affected women by providing free surgery and follow-up medical care.
The foundation said it plans to continue offering similar services beyond the current campaign, with the aim of establishing regular access to specialized treatment for women affected by childbirth-related injuries.
Obstetric fistula remains a significant maternal health challenge in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, where limited access to skilled obstetric care can leave women vulnerable to preventable childbirth injuries.
