Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Somalia has announced on Sunday in Mogadishu the launch of a national program to modernize its agricultural sector, focusing on climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable farming practices.
Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Khayir Maareeye, introduced the initiative — called Plant and Prosper Somalia (BBS) — which aims to transform traditional farming methods into modern systems that benefit both farmers and the environment.
The program was inaugurated with nine pilot farms, marking the first step toward a target of 100 farms over the next three years. Implementation will involve collaboration with federal member states, local farmers, private-sector stakeholders, banks, and supporting organizations.
The launch ceremony was attended by FAO Somalia representatives, the Qatari Ambassador to Somalia, and officials from WFP, CARE, NRC, Qatar Charity, as well as Somali bank leaders including AGRA Bank, Dahabshiil, and Salaam Bank. Local agripreneurs who will benefit from the BBS innovation were also present.
“The initiative will enable Somalia to adopt modern, climate-smart agricultural techniques that enhance productivity, ensure sustainability, and provide tangible benefits to both communities and the environment,” Minister Maareeye said.
