Somalia, 3 July 2026 – Somalia and Italy signed a security agreement in Mogadishu on Friday on police training, counterterrorism and institutional cooperation, Somalia’s Ministry of Internal Security said.
The agreement was signed by Somalia’s Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag and Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi during the Italian minister’s visit to Somalia.
According to the ministry, the agreement focuses on expanding cooperation in security, police training, counterterrorism, migration management and institutional capacity building.
Senior Somali officials, including Police Commissioner Asad Osman Abdullahi and the ministry’s Director General Mohamed Hassan Shire, attended the signing ceremony.

The agreement places emphasis on strengthening education and professional training programmes for the Somali Police Force, improving the capabilities of Somali trainers and enhancing their ability to train other officers.
It also includes plans for officer exchanges, study visits and cooperation in sharing expertise, technical knowledge and best practices in security sector development.
The ministry said the deal is expected to help strengthen Somalia’s security institutions, improve the professional capacity of the Somali Police Force and support broader efforts to promote peace, stability and address shared security threats.
