Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) — Somalia and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) discussed strengthening job opportunities, labour migration and regional integration at a meeting on Wednesday between Labour Minister Salim Aliyow and an IGAD delegation.
The meeting, held at the Minister’s office, focused on strengthening cooperation between Somalia and IGAD in job creation, labour migration management, protection of workers’ rights, and enhancing economic ties among countries in the region.
The two sides also discussed the implementation of the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons in the IGAD Region, which is important for facilitating the legal movement of people and workers, while helping create employment opportunities and enhancing regional integration.

The minister noted that Somalia is prioritising the implementation of policies and programmes that promote job creation, facilitate safe, orderly, and regular labour migration, and support sustainable economic development.
Labour officials described the meeting as an important step in ministry's efforts to develop the labour market, protect Somali workers’ rights and strengthen cooperation at both regional and international levels.
The meeting comes as Somalia is accelerating efforts to create meaningful employment opportunities and strengthen the country’s participation in regional cooperation, enabling Somali citizens to benefit from economic and employment opportunities across IGAD member states.
