Somalia, 18 December 2025- The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, officially handed over the leadership of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) to the Republic of Uganda today.
The handover of the chairmanship of the EASF Policy Committee and Military Chiefs took place in Mogadishu during the ongoing 35th Ordinary Meeting of the EASF Defence Ministers, which concluded today.
In his speech during the handover ceremony, Fiqi emphasized that the Federal Government of Somalia remains committed to continued support, active participation, and playing a key role in joint efforts to ensure peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

During the one year that Somalia held the leadership of EASF, the country hosted important meetings that boosted regional cooperation. Somalia has hosted the EASF meetings twice, highlighting the country’s vital role in regional security and cooperation.
The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) is a regional organization composed of military, police, and civilian units, designed to respond to security, peacekeeping, and humanitarian emergencies in member states of the region.
Somalia took over the leadership of the EASF Policy Committee from the Republic of Djibouti one year ago, and this position is rotated annually among defence ministers of the member countries.
