Somalia, July 9, 2026 – Somalia’s federal government and three opposition platforms have agreed to continue political dialogue following a series of preliminary meetings aimed at easing political tensions and advancing discussions on the country’s political future.
The consultations brought together representatives of the Federal Government of Somalia and three opposition groups: the Somali Future Council (SFC), the Nabad iyo Nolol party led by former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, and the National Unity Forum.
In separate but nearly identical statements issued on Wednesday, all parties confirmed that the meetings had taken place in a cordial atmosphere and agreed to continue the dialogue process. They also expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s role in facilitating the discussions.
The preliminary consultations were held separately with each political group as part of Türkiye’s mediation efforts to help build consensus ahead of broader political negotiations.

The next phase of the dialogue is expected to involve representatives of the federal government, opposition groups, Türkiye, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Nations. International partners are expected to continue holding separate consultations with the government and opposition before broader talks move forward.
The discussions come amid persistent disagreements over Somalia’s electoral framework, constitutional reforms and preparations for upcoming elections, issues that have fuelled political tensions in recent months.
While the talks did not produce a formal political agreement, the commitment by all sides to continue negotiations reflects a shared willingness to pursue dialogue as the primary mechanism for resolving their differences and maintaining political stability.
