MOGADISHU (Dawan) – July 29, 2026 – The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned the entry of Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and thousands of Israelis into the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, saying the move violates the sanctity of one of Islam’s holiest sites.
The visit took place on Thursday, July 23, 2026, during the Jewish observance of Tisha B’Av, with Ben-Gvir and other visitors entering the compound under the protection of a large number of Israeli police officers.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation described the action as a serious violation of the dignity and religious significance of Al-Aqsa Mosque, saying it provoked the feelings of millions of Muslims around the world.
The Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem reported that 3,228 people entered the Al-Aqsa courtyards during the morning visit, while the total number of visitors recorded throughout the day exceeded 4,200.

During the visit, Ben-Gvir was recorded saying that Jews were praying at the site and expressing that they felt ownership of the compound. His remarks and presence drew criticism from Palestinian authorities, Jordan and several Arab and Muslim countries.
Somalia reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people and called for the preservation of the historical and legal status of Jerusalem’s holy sites.
The Somali government also urged the international community and the United Nations Security Council to take action against provocative acts and hold accountable those responsible for violations affecting Islamic holy sites.
Somalia reiterated its support for the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state, saying it continues to back a two-state solution as the path toward lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
