Somalia, July 8, 2026 – Somalia’s cabinet has approved a memorandum of understanding with Egypt to strengthen cooperation in maritime transport and port development, the Office of the Prime Minister said on Thursday.
The agreement, reached between Egypt’s Ministry of Transport and Somalia’s Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport, focuses on expanding cooperation in the maritime sector, including port development, exchange of technical expertise and improving institutional capacity.
Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, thanked the cabinet for approving the agreement, describing it as an important step toward advancing the country’s infrastructure development and strengthening international partnerships.

The agreement is expected to support cooperation between the two countries in developing ports, sharing technical knowledge, enhancing maritime transport systems and aligning sector practices with international standards.
The agreement also supports Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP), according to the government, by contributing to national development priorities, improving the competitiveness of Somali ports and expanding the country’s position in maritime services.
Somalia, which has one of Africa’s longest coastlines, has been seeking to modernise its ports and improve maritime services as part of efforts to boost trade, investment and regional connectivity.
