United States, 3 January 2025 - For the first time in 54 years, Somalia has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in January 2026, marking a historic achievement for the Horn of Africa country.
Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman, in a press conference held at the Council’s headquarters on Friday, stated that “Somalia is deeply honored to assume the presidency of the Security Council after our country’s return to the council after 54 years.” Abukar also noted that this achievement is a crucial step that highlights Somalia’s commitment to international diplomacy.
Ambassador Osman emphasized that Somalia is committed to contributing to the protection of international law, the safety of civilians, and peaceful conflict resolution. “We aim to be a voice of reason, to build understanding,” he said.

Somalia has stated that it is fully committed to working at the highest diplomatic standards, focusing on efficiency, transparency, inclusivity, and building lasting agreements. A significant event during Somalia’s presidency will be a high-level debate on strengthening and promoting international law in maintaining peace and security, which will take place on January 26, and will be chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter.
Additionally, an open debate on the Middle East will be held on January 28, also chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The presidency of the Security Council will pass to the United Kingdom in February 2026.
