Ethiopia, December 2025 - The Somali Regional State has launched the construction of $1.44 million (240 million Ethiopian birr) Xiintooy village water supply project in Doollo-bay District of Afdheer Region.
The launch ceremony, on Monday, was presided over by Deputy Minister of the State’s Bureau of Water, Abdi Muhamed Abdi, and attended by the Head of Prosperity Party Affairs in Afdheer Region, Aden Gedi, and the Governor of Doollo-bay District, Aden Muhamed.
The water supply project, being implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with Germany’s Development Bank (KfW), includes all key components of a community water system. It is scheduled to be completed within one year.

The Deputy Minister said the project will significantly address the shortage of clean water in Xiintooy village and improve and health conditions of the local community once completed.
Meanwhile, UNICEF implements a range of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects across Jigjiga city and surrounding areas, focusing on access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. These initiatives aim to reduce the negative impacts of recurring droughts and waterborne diseases, particularly those affecting women and children.
Officials described the Xiintooy project as a major boost to efforts to expand access to basic services and reduce water scarcity in Doollo-bay District.
