5 June 2026 - Wajir Referral hospital has denied allegations that they mishandled patients who were injured during Madaraka day and the hospital mismanaged the unit the patient sought help at a private facility.
In a press statement, the hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Dahir Somow said the patient in question was admitted on 1st of June after allegedly being injured during a stampede to access the Wajir stadium where Madaraka day celebration was being held.
The CEO said following the review by Orthopedic surgeon, CT scan of the pelvis was requested and done, the CT scan he noted showed comminuted displaced fractures of the left posterior acetabular wall and posterior acetabular wall column with associated posterior dislocation of the left femoral head.
He added that urgent orthopedic management was recommended.
The following morning, during the routine ward round by medical staff in the surgical department, the referral hospital boss claimed they found that the patient had absconded before the completion of the planned treatment process.

“The next time the hospital management became aware of the patient’s whereabouts was through a video circulating on social media in which relatives claimed that they were not assisted at the hospital and had sought help at a private facility that charged them 120,000,” said Dr Somow in his statement.
He alleged that had the patient remained at the facility, the required treatment pathway would have continued under the coverage of the social health Authority (SHA).
“The patient would not have been required to pay out of pocket for the surgery and investigation including the CT scan, subject to the application of SHA process,” read the statement.
He urged the public to seek clarification from the hospital before sharing information that may misled the public, adding that they are committed to serving all patients with professionalism, compassion and accountability.
