Ethiopia, 23 June 2026 – Somali Region President Mustafe Muhumed Omar launched the 2026 Green Legacy programme to plant 15 million trees across the region, officials said.
The programme, launched under the slogan “Plant a Tree, Leave Hope,” is aimed at strengthening environmental protection, combating land degradation and reducing the impact of climate change.
Officials said the Green Legacy programme has been implemented in the Somali Region for eight years since it was first launched in 2011 under the Ethiopian calendar, with millions of trees planted during that period.
Mustafe urged residents and leaders to take part in the campaign, saying the programme should be implemented in a way that delivers lasting benefits for communities and the environment.

“The people and leadership should take responsibility to ensure this programme is truly implemented, because it has a positive impact on our lives and the environment we live in,” Mustafe said.
The president called on the public to play an active role in the campaign to build a sustainable green environment and leave a better future for the next generation.
Authorities said the programme is expected to support environmental protection, reduce land degradation and contribute to a more sustainable green future.
