Ethiopia, 25 April 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali region launched a solar-powered irrigation project in Godey district on Friday to improve agricultural production and support vulnerable farmers, the regional broadcaster SRTV reported.
The project, inaugurated in the village of Cillaan, is being implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the Organisation for Welfare and Development in Action (OWDA), according to SRTV.
Regional officials, including the head of the President’s Office Hussein Hashi Qasim, attended the launch alongside representatives from the German embassy and partner organisations, SRTV said.

The scheme is expected to benefit 242 farming households, particularly those with limited income and restricted access to fuel for conventional irrigation systems.
The solar-powered system is capable of irrigating up to 109 hectares of farmland and is intended to increase agricultural output and improve livelihoods, the report said.
Authorities say the initiative forms part of efforts to promote sustainable farming and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in the region.
