Ethiopia, 26 October 2025 — The Somali Regional State has issued an early warning on expected low Deyr rains, urging residents and local authorities to prepare for potential water shortages and strengthen climate resilience measures.
The alert followed a regional meeting held in Jigjiga on Saturday to review last year’s summer rainfall data and present the latest Deyr season forecast 2025 or 2018 (Ethiopian Calendar). The session was organized by the Somali Region Meteorological Center in collaboration with the Lowlands Livelihood Resilience Project (LLRP), which operates across 40 districts.
Officials said the ongoing second phase of LLRP aims to expand climate monitoring infrastructure and establish local weather stations to enhance early warning systems and community preparedness.
Mohamed Farah, Director of the Regional Disaster Risk Management Department, said forecasts indicate up to an 80 per cent decline in Deyr rainfall compared to normal levels — a situation he described as concerning for both rural and urban communities.
“The forecast shows that this year’s Deyr rains will be significantly below average — possibly up to 80 per cent less than usual. This calls for caution and preparedness. Communities should prioritize water harvesting and conservation to reduce the impact of dry conditions,” said Farah.
Opening the meeting, the Director of Relief and Resilience at the Office of the Regional President emphasized that the forum’s goal was to ensure the public is well-informed and ready to respond to anticipated weather changes. He encouraged residents to closely follow updates and alerts from the regional meteorological office.
The meeting concluded with a call for integrated action between government agencies, local administrations, and communities to strengthen early warning systems, promote sustainable water management, and mitigate the impacts of drought.
Officials reaffirmed that accurate and timely climate information remains key to building resilience in the Somali Region, where unpredictable rainfall continues to threaten livelihoods and food security.
