Mogadishu (Dawan) – Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday inaugurated the headquarters of the Interior Ministry in Boondheere district, reopened after 34 years.
The reconstruction of the facility was supported by the governments of Norway and Switzerland.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior federal government officials, members of parliament, international partners and civil society representatives.
The facility, long affected by the 1991 state collapse and later occupied by civilians, has now returned to the Interior Ministry. It has been prepared as a modern headquarters to manage key functions related to federalism, reconciliation, stabilization and other public services.
Interior Minister of Interior, Ali Yusuf Ali ‘Hosh’ described the reopening as a major achievement for the government, saying the ministry had finally returned to its original headquarters after 34 years.

The reopening, he noted, was as a testament of the government's efforts to strengthen public service delivery.
The Swiss Ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Mirko Giulietti, expressed satisfaction with the reconstruction efforts. He reaffirmed his country’s continued support for Somalia in state-building, reconciliation and local governance.
The reconstruction of the headquarters commenced in September 2024 after Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre laid the foundation stone at the site. At the time, the Prime Minister said the reconstruction was part of the government’s plan to restore essential services and improve the infrastructure of state institutions.
Before the reconstruction began, government forces took control of the site, where civilians and internally displaced families had lived for many years.
The reconstruction of the headquarters was supported by the governments of Norway and Switzerland, which assist Somalia in state-building, through the Somalia Stability Fund (SSF).
