Kenya, August 14, 2026 - President William Ruto has directed the government to give Sh5 million each to schools and institutions that took part in this year’s Kenya Music Festival, in a move aimed at strengthening creative arts beyond the competition stage.
Speaking during the State Concert for the 98th Kenya Music Festival at Bungoma State Lodge on Friday, Ruto said the funds would support facilities and programmes that nurture artistic talent.
“There are over 30 schools and colleges participating in this event today. We want to say congratulations. I want to ask the Ministry of Education that the schools and institutions be awarded Sh5 million each as a show of gratitude and appreciation,” Ruto said.
The President directed Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to oversee the allocation and ensure the money is used to improve infrastructure and facilities for music and other creative activities.
Ruto said the support would also help the institutions prepare for future music and drama festivals, potentially pushing the total allocation beyond Sh150 million.

The announcement came as institutions were recognised for their performances at the 98th Kenya Music Festival, with Bunyore Girls High School taking the senior schools category, while Kenyatta University emerged top among universities.
Other winners included Moi Forces Academy, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, Koyonzo Special School, Nzoia Sugar, Kitui Teachers Training College and Eldoret National Polytechnic.
The President's announcement places greater emphasis on using school-based creative programmes not only as competitions, but also as platforms for developing and sustaining young talent.
