New York, 22 September 2026 Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and a high-level delegation arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to Villa Somalia.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mohamed Omar said President Hassan Sheikh is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 24, focusing on developments in Somalia and the wider region.
"The President will address the United Nations General Assembly on the 24th, where he will discuss the overall situation in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa," Ali Mohamed Omar, known as Ali Balcad, said.
Somalia is attending the 81st session as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a status Ali Balcad said gives particular significance to the country's participation.

The President is accompanied by a high-level delegation that will participate in various meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly. He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders and senior United Nations officials.
"We expect the President to highlight Somalia's role in global security and development during his stay there," Ali Balcad said.
Somalia’s participation in the 81st session comes during the second year of its 2025-2026 term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, giving the country a direct role in discussions and decisions concerning international peace and security.
