Mogadishu, 13 September 2026 Somalia's House of the People of the Federal Parliament on Saturday conducted the first reading of an agreement on cooperation and development of Africa's mineral resources, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The agreement was presented to parliament by Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Abdiwahab Aden Cananuug as part of the constitutional process for reviewing and approving international agreements.
The Charter Establishing the African Minerals Strategy Group and Cooperation on Critical Minerals Development is part of efforts to strengthen cooperation among African countries in the management of natural resources, with a focus on technical cooperation, knowledge sharing and expanding investment opportunities.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said the agreement would support efforts to develop Somalia's mining sector in line with national laws and the protection of the country's interests.
The ministry added that it continues to develop legal and institutional frameworks aimed at promoting transparent management, responsible investment and sustainable use of Somalia's mineral resources.
The House of the People and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources are working together to advance agreements and legislation that support the growth of the mining sector and management of Somalia's natural resources.
