Somalia, 8 October 2025 — The Somali opposition has postponed its planned protest over security concerns following a recent attack on the Godka Jilacow regional office of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
The incident has heightened worries about the safety of public gatherings in the capital.
Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, a senior opposition figure, addressed the issue at a press conference late Wednesday after a meeting between opposition leaders, government representatives, and a mediation committee focused on protest security.
“We all agreed that, while considering the recent security challenges, especially the attack at Godka Jilacow, the headquarters of the National Intelligence and Security Agency in the region, the meeting took full responsibility for the country’s security, particularly in the capital,” Abdishakur said.
He added that both sides agreed to form a joint committee to assess security for the upcoming protest, taking into account recent incidents, particularly the attack on Godka Jilacow.
“It was agreed that the protest is a constitutional right, but due to the increased security concerns, particularly the potential for exploitation by terrorist groups, efforts must be made to ensure the protest proceeds peacefully,” he noted.
The joint committee will assess the situation within the next 10 days and come to a decision on the planned protests.
