Somalia, 10 August 2026 – Opposition group, Somali Future Council, has rejected the election of Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur ‘Jama’ as speaker of the House of the People, calling Monday vote a ‘sham exercise’.
In a statement issued hours after the election, the council said it strongly rejects the election conducted by a parliament “whose mandate has expired.”
The council said the constitutional term of Somalia’s Federal Parliament ended on April 14, 2026, questioning the parliament’s constitutional and political authority to elect a new speaker.
The opposition group further accused the presidency of seeking to use the parliamentary leadership election to influence the country’s upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

It said Somalia’s electoral disputes should not be resolved through unilateral decisions, calling instead for an inclusive political agreement that would pave the way for free and credible elections.
“A completed term cannot produce a new term; a rushed election cannot produce legitimacy,” the council said in its statement.
Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur ‘Jama’ was elected the new speaker of the House of the People after securing 142 votes. His rival Abdirahman Omar Moallin ‘Daada’, received 30 votes.
