Somalia, 11 November 2025 — The Somali Democratic Alliance (SDA), a coalition of 23 political parties, is calling for a one-month postponement of the Banadir Regional Local Council elections “to allow political parties make adequate preparations.”
In a statement on Monday, the Alliance said the elections should be pushed forward to December 30 from the scheduled date of November 30 to give all political parties adequate time to finalize candidate lists, and conduct voter outreach across Banadir’s districts.
“The Alliance agreed that the local council elections should be held on December 30 to give all political associations sufficient time to prepare,” the statement read.
The SDA includes members of the Salvation Forum bloc, which recently reached an agreement with the Somali government. Among its prominent members is former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke.
The coalition emphasized that the additional preparation time would help level the playing field for all political organizations and strengthen the integrity of the electoral process in Somalia’s capital region.
The Banadir Local Council elections in Mogadishu have been postponed three times, each time by one month.
