Somalia, 7 May 2026 — Somalia’s disaster agency meet United Nations Development Programme officials Tuesday to discuss new funding to help the country cope with drought and floods.
Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), met with Shoko Noda, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Crisis Bureau Director, to align strategies for long-term resilience as the nation faces a complex mix of climate shocks and economic pressures.
During the meeting, Commissioner Abdulle emphasized that the visit comes at a critical moment for Somalia, necessitating a shift toward systems that can withstand future shocks while delivering sustainable development.

The Commissioner highlighted the importance of the upcoming donor conference in Nairobi, calling on the UNDP leadership to assist in mobilizing resources and ensuring the active participation of international partners.
The commissioner said SoDMA and UNDP are working on an approach that aims to ensure that immediate emergency responses and long-term recovery interventions are delivered as a unified response to fast-track progress toward sustainable development goals.
He added SoDMA-UNDP partnership remains a driving force for collective action to deliver a lasting impact for Somali communities.
