Somalia, 19 May 2026 Somalia’s disaster agency (SoDMA) on Tuesday distributed food aid to 2,500 drought-affected families in Buur Hakaba district as officials warned of worsening humanitarian conditions across the country.
A delegation led by SoDMA Commissioner, Mahmoud Moalim, visited the district, which authorities described as one of the areas hardest hit by drought and food shortages.
The aid distribution was supported by the Chinese government, SoDMA said.
Speaking during the visit, Mahmoud said Somalia was facing overlapping crises linked to drought, conflict, rising food prices and declining international humanitarian support.
“More than 6 million people are facing food shortages, while over 2 million children under the age of five are affected by malnutrition,” Mahmoud said.

He said Buur Hakaba was among the districts experiencing some of the most severe humanitarian conditions in Somalia.
The commissioner also linked worsening food insecurity to conflict in the Middle East, saying global instability had contributed to rising food prices and reduced humanitarian funding.
“The situation forces us to work together and intensify efforts to support our people,” he said.
Somalia has repeatedly appealed for increased international humanitarian assistance as the country faces recurring droughts, displacement, conflict and economic pressures.
According to U.N. agencies, millions of Somalis remain in need of humanitarian aid, particularly in areas affected by drought, insecurity and limited access to basic services.
