Jowhar (Dawan Africa) — Abdullahi Mohamed Ali “Sanbalolshe,” Somalia’s former spy chief, has reclaimed his seat as a Member of Parliament in the Lower House, representing constituency #HOP058 in Hirshabelle. The by-election, held on Friday, June 20, 2025, in Jowhar, marks his return to Parliament after a one-year hiatus, during which he served as the head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). Sanbalolshe previously held the #HOP058 seat before his NISA appointment, leaving it vacant for over a year.
The election, conducted at the Hirshabelle Regional Parliament headquarters, was smooth and orderly, with 101 delegates participating. Sanbalolshe secured 98 votes, while three voters abstained. The results were announced by Abdi Addow Mohamed from the National Electoral Commission, who officially presented Sanbalolshe with his MP certificate.
Sanbalolshe’s return is seen as a significant development in Somali politics, with his extensive experience in security and intelligence expected to strengthen his influence in Parliament and across the political landscape.
Sanbaloolshe has a long history in both security and politics, with notable roles such as Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Turkey, and serving as Minister of Internal Security and Treasury. Since leaving NISA, his supporters anticipate that he will bring a new dynamic to Somalia’s political scene, with the potential to shift the balance of power.
