Djibouti, 2 October 2025 – The Government of Djibouti has received a humanitarian aid shipment from Russia to support ongoing efforts to address the country’s worsening drought, which has left thousands of people at risk of chronic hunger.
The handover ceremony, held on Wednesday at Djibouti International Airport, was attended by senior government officials, including the Minister of Social Affairs, Olofah Ismail Abdou, and Andrei Shanin, Chargé D’affaires of the Russian Embassy in Djibouti.
The 23-ton Russian donation, consists of food items, medicines, and medical equipment. Officials said the aid is intended to meet the urgent needs of families hardest hit by the prolonged drought.
“This support demonstrates the strong commitment of the Russian people and government to stand with Djibouti during these difficult times,” Mr Shanin said during the ceremony.
Djiboutian authorities welcomed the aid, describing it as a step that strengthens the historic ties between Djibouti and Russia.
“This donation will be part of the national drought response plan, which the government has designed to assist families severely affected by the crisis,” said Amina Ahmed Warsame, Secretary-General in the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The Djiboutian government has previously stressed that the ongoing drought is a direct consequence of global climate change, which has heavily impacted pastoralist communities and rain-fed agriculture.
According to the latest update from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 230,000 people in Djibouti are projected to face severe acute food insecurity between June and December 2025.
