Italy, 11 August 2026 - Romelu Lukaku is closing in on a move from Napoli to Fenerbahçe, with the Belgian striker having given the Turkish club the green light to proceed with the transfer.
The move would bring an end to Lukaku's two-year spell in Naples and take the experienced striker to the Turkish Süper Lig.
Fenerbahçe have emerged as Lukaku's preferred destination after opening talks with the 33-year-old forward.
Sky Sport Italia reported on August 9 that Lukaku had already given his approval for the move to Turkey, while negotiations between the two clubs continued over the transfer fee. The report said Fenerbahçe initially offered €5 million and that the clubs were hoping to reach an agreement within days.
Napoli Rejected Fenerbahçe's Initial Offer#
The biggest obstacle has been the transfer fee.
Corriere dello Sport reported on August 10 that Napoli rejected Fenerbahçe's first proposal, understood to be around €5 million. Napoli's valuation was considerably higher, with the Italian club seeking a fee in excess of €10 million.
Other Italian reports have placed Napoli's desired figure in the €10 million to €12 million range.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Napoli were prepared to facilitate Lukaku's departure and could lower their initial asking price to free up significant salary expenditure and make room for further squad additions.
The negotiations therefore appear to be heading toward a conclusion.
Why Napoli Are Willing to Let Lukaku Leave#
Lukaku's departure would provide Napoli with substantial relief on their wage bill.
The Belgian striker is understood to be one of the higher earners in the Napoli squad, and moving him on would create financial and squad-management flexibility for the Italian champions.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that freeing Lukaku's salary is an important part of Napoli's calculations as the club reshapes its squad. The newspaper also reported that Napoli need a transfer fee high enough to avoid taking a loss on the investment made when they signed him.
Napoli officially signed Lukaku from Chelsea on a permanent transfer on August 29, 2024. The club's announcement confirmed that the Belgian joined after previously working with Antonio Conte at Inter.
Chelsea Could Benefit From the Transfer#
Another financial element complicating the negotiations is Chelsea's reported sell-on entitlement.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli's 2024 agreement for Lukaku included an arrangement under which Chelsea would receive 40 percent of a future resale fee.
That means Napoli cannot simply treat the entire Fenerbahçe transfer fee as revenue.
The higher the eventual transfer fee, the more money would also have to be allocated to Chelsea under the reported agreement.

Recent reports have linked the club with Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus as a possible replacement for Lukaku, although that remains a separate transfer negotiation and should not be presented as a completed deal.
What Fenerbahçe Would Be Getting#
For Fenerbahçe, the potential signing would represent one of the biggest attacking acquisitions in the club's recent history.
Lukaku brings enormous experience from some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli.
He has also been one of Belgium's most prolific international players.
His physical presence, experience at the highest level and record as a goalscorer would make him a major addition to Fenerbahçe's attacking options.
The move would also continue the Turkish club's strategy of attracting internationally recognised players to strengthen their squad.
