Kenya, June 30 ,2026 - Five Coast-based human rights organisations have petitioned the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), calling for an urgent investigation into an alleged reckless shooting incident in Likoni that they say endangered members of the public.
The petition, dated June 30, 2026, was jointly submitted by HAKI Africa, Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), InformAction, VOCAL Africa and SHE Rises. The organisations are seeking a swift, impartial and transparent investigation into a viral video that allegedly shows a bodyguard linked to a Mombasa County politician discharging a firearm in public.
According to the petition, the individual is seen firing a gun indiscriminately before allegedly threatening members of the public with further gunfire if they attempted to restrain him.
The organisations argue that the alleged actions may constitute several criminal offences, including reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place, and intimidation and threats to life.
In their petition, the groups stressed that no individual should be above the law, regardless of their political affiliation or social status.
"The unlawful discharge of a firearm, threats against civilians, and actions that put lives at risk demand prompt, impartial and transparent investigations," the organisations said.

They further argued that the incident undermines public safety, erodes public confidence in law enforcement agencies, and violates constitutional protections, including the right to life and the right to freedom and security of the person.
The petitioners have asked the DCI to acknowledge receipt of the complaint and provide a status update within seven days. They also want investigators to identify, arrest and prosecute all those found culpable, secure the firearm allegedly used during the incident, determine whether it was lawfully possessed and used, and keep the public informed on the progress of the investigations.
Copies of the petition were also forwarded to the Inspector General of Police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Mombasa, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Mombasa Office, and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The organisations concluded by urging authorities to uphold public safety, accountability and the rule of law, expressing confidence that the DCI would carry out its mandate without fear, favour or prejudice.
